对于直径很小的齿轮，从键槽底面到齿根的距离x≤2.5，锥齿轮xm≤1.6m。值得注意的是，齿轮轴虽简化了装配，但整体长度大，给轮齿加工带来不便，而且，齿轮损坏后，轴也随之报废，不利于回用，应将齿轮与轴分开制造。故当(圆柱齿轮)x>2.5或(锥齿轮)xm>1.6时，则此处的强度可能不足，易发生断裂，此时应将齿轮与轴做成一体，齿轮与轴的材料相同，称为齿轮轴。
